What must be taken into account with reveal beads with mesh?

ETICS: Focus on service – Part 2

Due to the temperature, high forces act especially at the connection points between the external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) and the building opening, causing deformations and movements. These must be absorbed by the reveal beads with mesh, because a permanent, driving rain-proof connection between the building components must also be ensured under these effects. These three-dimensional movements must also be absorbed by self-adhesive reveal beads. Therefore, optimal adhesive suitability on the window or door is indispensable. The reveal beads can only develop their positive properties if they are completely and correctly connected to the frame of the building opening. The current, second part of our ETICS guide series therefore deals with the installation of adhesive profiles and what needs to be considered in advance.

What are self-adhesive reveal beads with mesh?

Self-adhesive reveal beads are attached to the substrate, for example the window or door frame, using a seldf-adhesive foam tape. They offer the advantage that narrow construction widths are also possible and thus cover a wide range of applications. This is an advantage especially for renovations with limited space. In the case of a an adhesive connection design, a so-called adhesive test must always be carried out before installation. It serves to prove whether the substrate on the building project is suitable for the profile. Especially in the area of windows, there is a wide variety of materials, coatings or colours that can have an influence on the suitability of the profile for an adhesive connection. With this great variety, only an adhesive test can offer final certainty. In Germany, the German Association for Insulation Systems, Plaster and Mortar (VDPM) even requires an adhesive test in the case of an adhesive connection in its leaflet "Formation of details with profiles and joint sealing tapes for external plaster and ETICS" (in German language).
Klebeprofile sind Produkte, die über ein selbstklebendes Schaumband auf den Untergrund z. B. den Fenster- oder Türrahmen aufgeklebt werden.

Adhesive test: This is how you can be sure!

At the beginning of the adhesive test, it is important that the surface to be glued is treated with a cleaner specified by EJOT or the window manufacturer. As soon as the suitable spot is free of dust and grease, a profile piece about 10 cm long is glued on and pressed on firmly. After at least ten minutes, the profile can be slowly peeled off. If the result is positive, the break takes place in the foam tape, i.e. residues of the foam tape must be visible on the adhesive substrate as well as on the profile throughout. Such a positive adhesive test results in the fact that the tested connection profiles can be used for the creation of a reliable and tight connection.

Important! Please note!

  1. The surface temperature of the substrate to be glued (window or door frame) must be at least +5 °C and must not exceed +40 °C during the adhesive test. A concealed spot of the window is recommended.
  2. We recommend a photo documentation of the adhesive test.
  3. Generally, the following applies: In order to ensure that the profiles function properly, windows and doors must be installed by the window manufacturer according to the latest state of the art, so that impermissible movements can be ruled out.

What do I have to observe when installing the profiles?

When installing the connection profiles, it is important to ensure that the surface of the window or door frame is free of dust and grease, just as it is beforehand during the adhesive test. Furthermore, the connection profile should be installed stress-free. The profile should be glued evenly over the entire length and pressed on firmly. This is crucial for both the adhesive strength and the functionality. Cavities behind the profiles must be avoided at all costs!

Important: The profile must be positioned at the front edge of the insulation board. However, adhesion is only carried out directly on the window or door frame, not on the insulation board. Attention: A reduction in the adhesion surface area (e.g. by protruding window connection foils or similar) is not permitted. Any protrusions should be carefully removed before installing the adhesive profiles.

Cutting profiles into pieces should also be avoided. This should only be done in the upper third of the component if the delivery length is exceeded.
