Conventional or innovative? Which is the best self-drilling screw?

Solar Guidebook – Part 5

Self-drilling screws are required to attach mounting rails in the roof cladding, e.g. for a trapezoidal profiled sheet, or to connect individual mounting elements to one another. What exactly needs to be considered when choosing the right screw?

EJOT generally recommends using products that have been approved by the building authorities. The EJOFAST® JF3-2-5.5 self-drilling screws, for example, are suitable for various mounting systems on the roof and for use in open spaces. In addition to general building authority approval Z.14.4-426, they also have European approval (ETA-10/0200) and product certification from the US industrial property insurance company FM Global and the independent assessment body ICC ES. Thanks to the various internationally recognised certifications, EJOT guarantees compliance with the highest quality and safety requirements. As a result, the EJOFAST® JF3-2-5.5 is suitable for international used. If required, the JF3-2-6.0 is also available as a multi-certified version with a slightly larger diameter.

However, the EJOFAST® range of self-drilling screws offers another major benefit compared to most other conventional self-drilling screws available on the market. The special tip geometry enables swarf-reduced screwing. This means that no sharp-edged flow chips are produced, which get stuck in the material, resulting in significantly reduced cleaning effort.

In bad weather, swarf that is not removed can lead to the formation of rust stains and discolouration on the component surface after just a very short time. The onset of rusting not only adversely affects the appearance, but can also cause deeper corrosion damage to the metal sections. The accumulation of long, sharp-edged swarf particularly increases the risk of damage to the profile surface during the assembly process itself. Additionally, when technicians needs to walk on roof surfaces, sharp-edged swarf under the shoes can cause long scratches.

The operating principle of EJOFAST® self-drilling screws means that virtually no material has to be removed by machining, so it does not end up on the component surface in the form of swarf. The material displacement during the installation process not only helps to avoid swarf, but also leads to a higher load-bearing capacity due to the channels formed when the material is displaced downwards. This channel formation leads to more threads engaging and thus a higher load-bearing capacity is achieved.
However, many other screw types are used for both roof and open-air systems in the area of thin sheet metal, self-drilling and self-tapping screws. We would be delighted to assist you in selecting the right screw for your particular installation project. EJOT also stocks a wide range of other products for building solar installations.

Our solar guidebook provides a concise overview of the key issues involved in planning and building solar installations. If you need assistance in planning a specific construction project, EJOT will be happy to advise you. Our services also include preparing an initial sizing for you.
